The Aecytonyx (also known as Leaper in the SNES/PS version) is an enemy in Chrono Trigger. It appears in the Giant's Claw in the Middle Ages. They share the same sprite as Crested Sprinter, who appears far earlier in the game. Yellow and small, they sport long tails and a big horn in their head that can be used to trust into their enemy and cause damage.
Battle and Strategy[]
Normally appearing in groups of two or more, they are generally easy to kill. Since their physical defense is relatively high, it is better to use Magic against these creatures, or Techs that, albeit being physical, deal Magic damage. Able to jump relatively high, they perform a tech called, Stomp, in which they jump atop an enemy and stomp them.
Name Etymology[]
The onyx part in the name is derived from the Greek word onyx, meaning "claw" or "nail", which might have to do with the location where these enemies appear being named Giant's Claw, or, alternatively, might have been simply chosen as a name that sounds scientific enough. The aecyto part isn't an existing Latin or Greek word, and, at least in the English translation, seems to be a transliteration of the Japanese eishito in a pseudo-Latin way.
Trivia[]
These creatures resemble Hadrosaurs, which run at high velocities and share similar cranial plumage.
