The Dimensional Vortex is an exclusive to Chrono Trigger DS as well as the mobile and Steam versions. It is unlocked after beating the game. Starting up your save file, 3 Dimensional Vortexes will open in 12000 BC, 1000 AD, and 2300 AD. These Vortexes are independent from the game's time clock, thus can be beaten in any order chosen. Each Dimensional Vortex is divided into 3 parts.

The first part is revisiting areas throughout the playthrough. In rare occasions, you may enter an area you have not yet been to; these rare areas often contain rare treasure. If you are trying to find the rare Magic Capsules without doing multiple playthroughs, this is the place to repeatedly do so as Dimensional Vortex repeats that specific Black Omen spot from Ghaj.

The second part contains its own unique dungeon. The 12000 BC is an icy mountain that plays the Singing Mountain theme that was left unused in the original game. The 1000 AD is a volcanic mountain that was supposed to appear in the original game, but did not make the final cut. The 2300 AD is a unique level that has quite a bit of character dialogue and a mission of separating the team members in half. Each of these dungeons contain harder enemies that can be as tough as bosses, so be very careful. However, these areas contain some of the best equipment in the game, exceeding most of the original game's gear. You can obtain the absurdly powerful Apocalypse Arm for Robo that can do 9999 damage upon critical hit. All treasures here can be collected once, but the dungeons themselves are repeatable, thus the best place to level up to 99 (i.e. 2 Snowbeasts at the end of 12000 BC Vortex).

For the Present, there is a special event that happens. Upon completing the second part but not yet approach the third part, Once-King Dalton will interrupt and challenge you. The fight isn't hard, but can catch people off guard and will drain MP.

The third part is a boss, called Shades. Each Vortex contain one of them and will appear to look like your 3 main characters. Once these shades are defeated, they will approach the character chosen, be absorbed, and permanently increase certain stats. They can only be fought once.

After beating all three Dimensional Vortex quests, the End of Time will have a new connection called Time's Eclipse, where the Dream Devourer quest can be accessed.
