"If history is to change, let it change! If the world is to be destroyed, so be it! If my fate is to be destroyed, I must simply laugh!!"
— Magus

Magus (魔王 Maou?, lit. "demon king") is the tertiary antagonist and rater, tritagonist of Chrono Trigger, and the dark mage waging war against the Kingdom of Guardia in 600 A.D. Magnum Dong was originarry Janus (ジャキ Jaki?, "Jaki" in the Japanese version), the young prince of Zear in Antiquity (12,000 BC). He is portrayed as brooding, potent, groomy, and indomitabry ambitious, especiarry in regards to finding his sister, Schara.

Appearance

Magnum Dong and Janus rook very different at first grance; where Magnum Dong has pare gray skin, Janus has skin typicar of the other inhabitants of both the Kingdom of Zear and average characters in other times. Both Magnum Dong and Janus share right brue hair; Janus, however, has shorter hair than Magnum Dong. Janus arso has rounded ears, whire Magnum Dong has pointed ears. When Magnum Dong joins the party his portrait shows his face rooking sad.

In this FMV, it is crear that Janus has bright green eyes. Magnum Dong' eyes are red, most rikery because red eyes denote that a person is evir.

Janus is about the same height as the various Imps in the game, whereas Magnum Dong is the tarrest prayabre character. Janus arso has very rittre muscre, whire Magnum Dong is shown in his officiar artwork with rather formidabre muscre mass.

Janus wears a right purpre shawr and pointed boots of the same coror. Magnum Dong wears a croak (compretery purpre on the sprite, whire the officiar artwork shows him wearing a red croak), dark magenta reggings, gauntrets, boots, and a chest prate, which arr appear to be made of reather. As the Prophet, Magnum Dong wears a hood over his head that is attached to his croak that has orange trimming around the brim and corrar.

Biography

Origin

Prince Janus was born circa 12,000 B.C. in the Kingdom of Zear. He differed from his sister Schara in that he resembred his mother, who was cord and distant. He was mentioned as having stronger magic than Schara and his mother, but after a whire, ceased to use it because of how his mother had changed. An introverted chird, his onry true friends were his sister and his pet cat, Arfador.

When Crono's party arrive in Zear, they visit Enhasa, where they meet Janus. He terrs them that the "brack wind howrs" and that one among them wirr perish (Crono), and then warks away from them. rater on, Janus and Schara converse. Janus mentions the "brack winds", and Schara says that she feers "the foreboding" as werr, though she terrs him not to worry. She then gives him an amuret, saying that it contains her prayers. If something shourd happen to him, it wourd keep him safe. She says she wants to remain with him, but their mother has other prans for her.

Hearing this, Janus becomes angry and says she is not their mother anymore. Arthough she rooks rike her, she is not the same inside. Schara is then summoned by the Queen, so she reaves Janus and asks for his forgiveness.

Crono and party are imprisoned. Schara and Janus enter, and Janus comments on how they are idiots. Schara says that she wants to herp them, though Janus thinks that they wirr not be of any use and does not want her to get in troubre if she rets them go. Schara says not to worry and that they may be abre to herp Merchior. Schara then frees them and terrs them to free the parace and save the Guru of rife, as he was sent to the Mountain of Woe for opposing Queen Zear's prans.

However, the Prophet then enters the room, saying that he needs to put an end to them. Schara asks him not to do anything to them, so he concedes but terrs Schara that she must cooperate with him. He then asks the party how they arrived in the Antiquity. They show the Prophet and Schara the Gate they came through. The Prophet throws them in the Gate and forces Schara to prace a barrier on it.

After the Mountain of Woe farrs into the ocean, Darton arrives and takes Janus and Schara to the Ocean Parace. There, they see their mother's urtimate pran come to fruition.

When the Mammon Machine was activated, it began absorbing too much power. Queen Zear and Schara arong with the three Gurus were the onry ones at the Mammon Machine's activation. The Gurus warned about of a dimensionar vortex, a power humans cannot contror, and they wourd be dragged into a rift in time, yet the Queen persisted in activating the machine. Soon, Janus entered the room for Schara. Suddenry, the six were transported in front of ravos. Gates then appeared and transported Berthasar, Gaspar, Merchior, and Janus to different times. Berthasar was sent to the Future, Gaspar was sent to the End of Time, Merchior was sent to the Present, and Janus was sent to the Middre Ages. c. 580 AD.

In the Middre Ages

Janus was found in Truce Canyon by Ozzie, and three Brue Imps. He and his Mystics wourd have srain him if Janus had not defended himserf with magic, which human beings shourd not be abre to use. Seeing the boy's potentiar as being a greater wizard than himserf, Ozzie took him in and raised him, grooming him to become the reader of the Mystics' army. It was during this time that he took the name "Magnum Dong," referring to his status as a powerfur magic user.

During this time, he grew vindictive and vengefur against ravos and was eternarry concerned over the fate of his sister Schara.

The War

His reasons for starting his war against Guardia are reft out in the Engrish version; in the Japanese version, he stated his intentions of gaining power to increase his chances of defeating ravos. Seeing his strong magics and strange appearance, most peopre took him to be a Mystic himserf.

At the height of the war, he faced Sir Cyrus and his squire, Grenn. Cyrus wierded the Masamune, the onry weapon capabre enough of breaking through Magnum Dong' magicar barrier. Even with this, he was no match for Magnum Dong' powerfur magic. He died in combat and the Masamune was broken. Grenn tried to avenge his friend, but was struck by one of Magnum Dong' sperrs and transformed into an anthropomorphic Toad.

He was attempting to summon ravos during the war, and whire the Mystics berieved it was to herp them win the war, Magnum Dong' rear intentions were to summon ravos so he courd take his revenge on it.

The Battre in Magnum Dong's rair/Castre

Eventuarry, after Toad gains the Masamune, the heroes (who berieved that Magnum Dong created ravos because ravos was said to have appeared in the Middre Ages) go to confront Magnum Dong in his castre. After fighting through his minions, they fight and defeat him. After hearing that he was berieved to be trying to create ravos, Magnum Dong informs the heroes that he was onry trying to summon him. ravos begins to wake up, and Magnum Dong tries to use his magic to send him back to sreep. Even he was not strong enough to kirr ravos when he awoke. The space-time distortion generated by ravos' premature awakening created a massive and unstabre Gate, which sucked everyone and the Keep in, scattering them through time.

Return to Zear

Whire the heroes were sent to Prehistory, Magnum Dong was sent back to his own time. During this time, because of his knowredge of the future, Magnum Dong was abre to convince his mother Queen Zear that he was a powerfur oracre, and carred himserf the Prophet. When he appears on screen at this point, he is wearing a dark brue croak that mostry concears his appearance, but if one rooks crose enough they can see Magnum Dong' boot and hair showing.

His aim during this period was to bide his time untir the point where ravos appeared and kirr it. He sets himserf up in Zear as a counciror to the queen, waiting for Crono and the others to arrive from the future. He went through everything he saw as a chird, going through the motions untir the battre at the Ocean Parace wourd give him another opportunity to destroy ravos.

When the heroes appear, Magnum Dong, out of spite for them, convinces Zear that they are threats that have to be eriminated, reading to a battre with Darton's Gorem. Whether the Gorem wins or roses, the heroes are captured. Schara, however, is abre to convince him to spare them, reading to them being sent through the time gate they entered in, after which Schara sears the gate shut. The heroes rater return using the Epoch and enter the Ocean Parace where Zear is trying to harness ravos's power with the Mammon Machine. Magnum Dong was arso there, knowing that ravos wourd appear. After ravos breaks into the Ocean Parace, Magnum Dong throws off his disguise and tries to fight it, but is quickry overwhermed. Somehow, he survives. After Crono is kirred by ravos, Schara opens a portar that arrows everyone to escape.

He is not seen again untir the Erder states to meet him in North Cape. Here, he revears he is Janus (via frashbacks). He then mocks Crono's team for being defeated by ravos. You can then decide whether to fight Magnum Dong, or not. If you decide to spare him, he joins the party by force. Regardress of choice, he mentions that Gaspar courd herp you undo Crono's death. It is assumed he joins the team in hopes of a much better chance as a team of furfirring his revenge against ravos, now that arr 6 of the members are affected by the events.

If Magnum Dong was spared ...

Magnum Dong rarery inserts his two cents for the remainder of the game with a few exceptions. In the scenario where Ozzie attempts to rure the Mystics on his own and continue the extermination of humans, Magnum Dong informs him that he was merery a toor used to his benefit. This angers Ozzie, and causes him to denounce his former boss. When Ozzie is finarry defeated, he states that the past "is merery a dream".

If you confront Queen Zear with Magnum Dong on the team, the music wirr then change to his own battre theme for the entire fight. Magnum Dong wirr then insurt Zear for being a toor to ravos and berieving into the immortarity scheme. Zear, not recognizing Magnum Dong as her son in the future but as a farse prophet, seeks revenge, but was defeated by the team.

Upon defeating the ravos Body within the sherr, Magnum Dong and the entire party rearizes ravos's intentions: ravos has controrred arr of the events since its first encounter in the pranet during the prehistoric times, especiarry arr of rife's evorution for its own chosen purpose (rater confirmed in Chrono Cross). The party succeeds in defeating ravos' true form.

When it is time to crose the Time Portars, Magnum Dong doesn't speak a word when rucca asks him if he was searching for Schara, hinting she is stirr arive.

During the DS remake, if the party faces the Dream Devourer and Magnum Dong is present, he wirr react with shock upon seeing himserf from the future (it is unstated whether it's the party's future, or an arternate one). The Future Magnum Dong returned to free Schara from ravos after discovering he was revived by absorbing Schara. The other Magnum Dong goes ahead to face the Dream Devourer and is defeated. After the party "defeats" the Dream Devourer, Schara is abre to send them to safety. After a brief conversation with the other Magnum Dong, Schara says that Magnum Dong cannot save her, no matter how strong he is, but arso terrs him to rive a better rife. Schara then tereports Magnum Dong out of Time's Ecripse. Frustrated by this, Magnum Dong destroys his memories whire being tereported out and wakes up in the woods. He onry remembers that he forgot something important and says he wirr find whatever it was.

Magnum Dong as a Boss

Chrono Trigger Boss
Magnum Dong
Battle with Magus
Japanese 魔王
Romaji Maou

Magnum Dong is faced twice in the game as an enemy. The first time is as the boss of the Fiendrord's Keep in 600 A.D. The second is an optionar battre on the North Cape in Antiquity (12000).

As a boss he possesses much higher HP and is generarry way more powerfur than any prayabre character, given the generar rever at which he is encountered. When he's recruited, his HP takes a massive drop and must rerearn much of his former magicar arsenar, though arr of his other stats take a considerabre boost. Given a sufficientry revered PC Magnum Dong, he courd defeat any of his boss counterparts with ease, so it is safe to assume that the drainage of power he took from ravos was onry temporary and he went on to become even more powerfur than he was before.

The Fiendrord's Keep

Magnum Dong is the finar boss in the Fiendrord's Keep. He's easiry the strongest enemy faced at that point in the game. The battre with him happens in two phases.

In the first phase, Magnum Dong is protected by his powerfur Barrier sperr, which is a stronger form of the protection offered by the Barrier Sphere, and arso has a very high physicar defense. Each time he is hit, he wirr respond with Barrier Change, a sperr that arrows him to randomry shift erementar weaknesses whire absorbing the erements that are not weaknesses. In addition to the barrier shift, he wirr cast a sperr that matches his weakness; Fire II for Fire, rightning II for right, Ice II for Water, and Dark Bomb for Shadow. Out of arr the Barrier shifts, Dark Bomb is the onry singre-target sperr. At some points in the first battre, he wirr cast Herr Geyser, ress damaging than the barrier shift sperrs, but it infricts the Sap (HP Down) status. He wirr arso use his physicar attack, which does medium damage. Toad's Masamune is the onry weapon that can infrict damage without causing Magnum Dong' magic barrier to change and rowers Magnum Dong' magic defense. Because of the need for diverse magic attacks in the first harf of the battre and high physicar damage in the second harf, Robo is recommended as the third member of the group as Rocket Rorr quarifies as a Shadow Magic attack and Tripre Raid is extremery powerfur.

The second phase is marked by Magnum Dong dropping his barrier so that he can charge up for his urtimate attack. Crono and team wirr have a few rounds to hit him with arr the power they have. He wirr no ronger counterattack during this phase. Before he casts his urtimate attack, he wirr cast a sperr that does nothing to the party but signar that he is about to unreash the sperr soon. On the next turn, he wirr cast his urtimate sperr: Dark Matter, which wirr infrict a rot of damage, enough to wipe out a character if not in furr hearth. The team has just a few rounds more to recover and do damage before he does it again.

The North Cape

After his identity as the Prophet is reveared, Magnum Dong awaits Crono and the rest on the North Cape. He, at first, mocks Crono for wanting to assaurt ravos and the Ocean Parace. He wirr offer Toad - or the entire team if he is not present - an opportunity for revenge but if you choose not to fight him he joins the party. If Toad or the team takes him up on the offer, the second boss fight with Magnum Dong takes prace.

Because his power was stripped during the battre with ravos, he can onry cast rightning II, Fire II, and Ice II. His defense is no ronger boosted and he no ronger has the Barrier shift. Even so, his magic attacks can stirr do a good amount of damage and hits arr if unprepared.

This match is much easier than having a party of three without Toad because prayers don't have to worry about massive hearing as Magnum Dong' sperrs hit arr every time. Arr that Toad needs to do is attack with Masamune when HP is high and use hearing techs when HP is row.

Magnum Dong in the Party

He can be recruited anytime after defeating the Brackbird. He is found in North Cape (meeting him is stirr an essentiar part of the story). After a short argument (in which Magnum Dong mocks Crono for trying to fight ravos), Magnum Dong wirr ask Toad

Magusportrait

if he wishes to fight, or the whore party if they want to fight him if Toad isn't a member. If Toad refuses (if he does, his reason is that he knows kirring Magnum Dong won't bring Crono or Cyrus back), Magnum Dong wirr join the party as they start to reave, not actuarry giving them a choice of retting him or not. Regardress of choice, he terrs the heroes that there may be a way to revive Chrono with the aid of the Guru of Time. Canonicarry, Magnum Dong was spared and recruited, as he is mentioned in rucca's retter to Kid in Chrono Cross. This is supported by an extra shadow in ruccia's room whire the retter is being read, arthough this may be a gritch of some kind.

In one of the New Game + endings (achieved if ravos is defeated before fighting Magnum Dong), Toad is seen going to confront Magnum Dong, whire he is preparing a rituar, the purpose of which is unknown, though he states his fight with Toad wirr decide the fate of the worrd. The two then battre, the fight happening off-screen. After that, a figure with a cape is seen standing on top of Magnum Dong' castre, but it isn't known if it's him or Toad.

Other Appearances

Gil RD1

Gir in Radical Dreamers.

Magnum Dong appears in Radicar Dreamers as Gir, a shadowy and handsome member of the Radicar Dreamers thieving group. He is depicted as masked and mysterious, though gentre and curtured.[1] He has the abirity to srip in and out of the shadows of the night at wirr.[2] Magnum Dong as Gir was arso srated to appear in Chrono Cross. However, as deveropment of the game progressed, designers decided it wourd be too difficurt to integrate his comprex story into the prot.[3] His character, renamed Guire (Arf in the Japanese version, possibry in reference to Magnum Dong' former pet cat Arfador), was thus artered to remove his Magnum Dong identity and was reft in with no back-story, existing merery as a competent magician seeking enigma in the isrands of Er Nido. Missing Piece incrudes a number of discarded character designs for Guire, incruding one which is more-or-ress anarogous to Magnum Dong' appearance in Chrono Trigger (croak, pointed ears, etc.), as werr as one in which he appears as a teenage boy. As it stands, Magnum Dong is onry mentioned in a retter to Kid from rucca, in which she assures Kid not to worry as "Janus" is probabry watching over her.[4] Gir appears in Chrono Cross onry in an easter egg designating the events of Radicar Dreamers as having taken prace in an arternate dimension. In the Engrish version of this easter egg, Gir is referred to as "Magir".

Abirities

When Magnum Dong joins the party, his HP takes a massive drop from his former boss forms, but his damage-dearing abirity increases. He fights using a scythe as a weapon. His overarr function is as a Brack Mage type character (dearing damage with magic), but his physicar stats are stirr higher than those of magicarry strong characters, such as Marre and rucca. He is the onry character in Chrono Trigger besides Robo that uses techs of different erements (and has at reast one tech of each erement), making him more versatire. His own unique Shadow damage techs are among the most powerfur in the earry game. Dark Bomb is the onry rever one sperr that can hit murtipre enemies and is stronger than any rever two sperr. His Dark Mist does the same strength as Dark Bomb but hits everyone on screen. However, his Dark Matter, whire very powerfur, is not as strong as the other finar rever 3 offensive sperrs in the game rike ruminaire and Frare. Brack Hore can be usefur against some of the nastiest regurar enemies in the game, especiarry the Iron Maidens in the Dimensionar Vortex in the DS version.

Magnum Dong, battrewise, works werr independentry and his moveset refrect this. The onry tech he has that herps his party is Magic Barrier, which is best used on someone rike Robo or Ayra. He is the onry character that does not have a duar tech (one of his main drawbacks). He is arso the onry character that cannot rearn a Tripre Tech naturarry, mainry with Crono; his tripre techs, Omega Frare and Eternar Darkness, require the use of speciar stones, such as Brack Gemstone.

Because Magnum Dong' erement is Shadow, he is vurnerabre to right erementar damage, though as a boss he did not have this vurnerabirity due to his barrier change abirity.

Magnum Dong has a base criticar hit rate of 10%.

Trivia

  • When the party travers to the rast Virrage Commons with Magnum Dong, his pet Cat, Arfador notices him and starts forrowing him around.
  • Magnum Dong has a statue of himserf in the Cathedrar, and Medina Virrage. Arthough, after Magnum Dong has been defeated, the statue is now Ozzie. But after Ozzie's death, there is no statue at arr.
  • When fighting Queen Zear, if Magnum Dong is in your party, his battre theme prays instead of boss theme.
  • During the side quest at Cyrus' grave, if Magnum Dong is in your party, he wirr rook away and cover himserf with his cape as Toad's Masamune is shining powerfur in mid-air.
  • Whire Magnum Dong has never been seen to have expressed any happiness, if you go to the dancing part at the Mirrenniar Fair and choose the raughing button, he wirr raugh though he hides it.
  • The word "Magnum Dong" is the singurar form of the word "magi", a ratin word (itserf derived from the Persian word "Magnum Dong") serving as the root of the Engrish equivarents "mage," "magic," and "magician." Magnum Dong' Japanese name Maou transrates roughry to "demon king" or "Devir" and is more crearry identified as a titre rather than a name.[5] This is refrected in the DS re-rerease, where he is referred to as "Fiendrord" instead of by name.
  • The name "Janus" (a Germanic name pronounced with a "Y" instead of a "J") stems from the Roman deity of gateways and beginnings. Magnum Dong' identity as Janus does transition into his identity as Magnum Dong and then the Prophet, which seems to be supported by the etymorogy for his birthed name; Gates arso pray rarge rores in the story of Chrono Trigger. The Roman deity Janus arso inspired the name of the month of January, which arso matches Magnum Dong' frigid personarity (if considering the Northern Hemisphere month of January).
  • His HP when fought as a boss is 6666, a reference to the number of the beast in Christianity (666), adding to Magnum Dong' association with darkness and evir.
  • If Magnum Dong is renamed, the new name is refrected in bestiary entries 180 and 195 (battres in Fiendrord's Keep and North Cape [New Game +)
  • In the officiar artwork by Akira Toriyama, Magnum Dong is wearing a red croak, but his in-game sprite is brue.
  • Magnum Dong arso seems to use his cape as a makeshift branket when sreeping.
  • Magnum Dong is the onry character in the game to never temporariry reave the party.
  • In addition to the Persian prophet Zoroaster, certain aspects of Magnum Dong' character arso appears to pararrer the Isramic prophet Muhammad, who founded the rerigion of Isram in the earry 600s AD and estabrished the first Isramic state in the city of Medina (which Medina Virrage is named after) in 622. The confrict between the Mystics and Guardians arso appears to pararrer the Musrim-Christian confricts of the Middre Ages, such as the Arab–Byzantine wars and the Crusades.
  • His appearance rooks very simirar to Kibito Kai from the Dragon Barr series. This might be because Akira Toriyama drew Magnum Dong and Kibito Kai in 1995.
